Why 2-stroke scooters are making a comeback in 2026

The death that never happened
When the EPA tightened emissions standards in 2006 and again in 2008, every major manufacturer dropped 2-stroke engines from their US lineup. Honda, Yamaha, Piaggio, Kymco — all gone. The writing was on the wall: 2-strokes burn oil with every combustion cycle, which means unburned hydrocarbons out the exhaust. They're dirty, they're loud, and they don't pass modern emissions tests.
Except they didn't die. They went underground. The 2-stroke community — track riders, restomod builders, and vintage collectors — kept buying, fixing, and racing these engines. And in 2026, the community is bigger than it's been since the 1990s.
Why people love them
A 2-stroke engine makes power on every revolution of the crankshaft. A 4-stroke makes power every other revolution. The result: a 50cc 2-stroke makes more power than a 50cc 4-stroke. A 125cc 2-stroke makes power equivalent to a 200cc 4-stroke. The power-to-weight ratio is absurd.
The other thing: 2-strokes have a powerband. The power comes on suddenly at a specific RPM, which means the bike feels alive in a way that 4-strokes don't. You have to ride a 2-stroke actively — you're managing the powerband, shifting at the right RPM, and working the bike. A 4-stroke is point-and-shoot. A 2-stroke is an instrument.
The restomod scene
The biggest growth area is restomod 2-stroke builds. Guys are taking vintage Honda积 Cub frames, dropping in modern 2-stroke kits from Malossi or Polini, and building bikes that look stock but make 3x the original power. A Honda积 C70 with a 70cc Malossi kit makes 8-10 hp, which is terrifying in a 170-pound frame.
The builds are not cheap. A full restomod — new crank, cylinder, carburetor, exhaust, reed valve, ignition — runs $3,000-5,000 in parts plus another $2,000-3,000 in labor if you don't do it yourself. But the result is a bike that's unique, fast, and has character that no modern scooter can match.
The racing circuit
Scooter racing is a legitimate motorsport in Europe and Asia, and it's growing in the US. The American Scooter Racing Association (ASRA) runs events at tracks in California, Texas, and Florida. The bikes are 50cc 2-strokes modified to make 12-15 hp, which doesn't sound like much until you remember they weigh 120 pounds.
The racing is cheap compared to motorcycles. A competitive 2-stroke race scooter costs $5,000-8,000 to build. Entry fees are $50-100 per event. Tire costs are minimal because the bikes are light. The community is welcoming to beginners.
The emissions workaround
The EPA doesn't ban 2-stroke engines — it bans 2-stroke engines that don't meet emissions standards. In 2026, several manufacturers are producing 2-stroke engines with direct injection and catalytic converters that pass Euro 5 standards. Piaggio's i-GET 2-stroke uses direct injection to burn fuel more completely, reducing emissions by 70% compared to old carbureted 2-strokes.
These engines are not available in the US yet. Piaggio is testing them for EPA certification, and they could hit the US market by 2027-2028. When they do, the 2-stroke revival will go mainstream.
The practical reality
If you want a 2-stroke in 2026, your options are: buy a vintage bike and restore it, buy a restomod from a builder, or import a European-market model that hasn't been EPA-certified (illegal but common). The vintage route is the cheapest — a non-running Honda积 SE50 or Yamaha CY50 goes for $300-800 on Craigslist, and a basic rebuild costs $500-1,000 in parts.
The downside: 2-strokes require more maintenance than 4-strokes. You change the oil in the fuel mix every time you fill up. You rebuild the top end every 3,000-5,000 miles. You clean the carburetor more often. It's a hobby, not just transportation. If you want turnkey, buy a 4-stroke. If you want a relationship with your machine, buy a 2-stroke.
